Part One: The Chest in the Kelp

Mira had kept the lighthouse on the Salt Coast for eleven years, ever since her mother's hands grew too unsteady for the great lamp's brass gears. Every evening she climbed the two hundred and six steps, wound the mechanism, and watched the light sweep out over water the color of a bruise.

The storm that night came in wrong. It did not build the way storms usually did, from a grey smudge on the horizon to a wall of cloud; it simply arrived, all at once, as though the sky itself had been holding its breath and finally let go.

When the wind finally dropped near dawn, Mira found a locked chest wedged among the rocks below the light, half-buried in kelp, with a name burned into the lid that she had not heard spoken aloud in eleven years.
