Part Two: The Boy from the Ferry

DEMO STORY, PART TWO — continuing the demo account's sample tale.

She did not open the chest that morning. She carried it up all two hundred and six steps instead, set it by the hearth, and let it sit there like a held breath while she went about the ordinary business of trimming wicks and logging the wind speed.

It was the boy from the mainland ferry who finally asked about it, three days later, delivering flour and salt the way he did every week. He recognized the burned name on the lid before Mira could stop him from looking, and went pale in a way that told her this story was bigger than her small light and her small coast.

That night, for the first time in eleven years, Mira lit the lamp early. Whatever was coming for the chest would see her light long before it reached her shore, and she intended to be ready for it.
